All species seen by all except as follows.

PENGUINS

African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) Dozens seen at the rather zoo-like Simon’s Bay reserve. We also saw them at the more pleasant Betty’s Bay reserve with probably over a thousand or so present. They were accompanied by Bank, Crowned and Cape Cormorants and Cape fur Seals.

GREBES

Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis)  Hundreds at Rondevleit reserve in Capetown.

Little Grebe (Tachypabtus ruficollis) Seen at sites throughout.

Great-crested Grebe (Podiceps cristata) A few seen at widely scattered sites.

GANNETS

Cape Gannet (Morus capensis) Hundreds at Lambert’s Bay nesting colony. An amazing spectacle.   Several other groups around Capetown .

CORMORANTS

Bank Cormorant (Phalacrocorax neglectus) Very few seen. Up to twenty five seen at Stoney point near Betty’s Bay.

Cape Cormorant (Phalacrocorax capensis) Common at Lambert’s Bay and Stoney point

Crowned Cormorant (Phalacrocorax coronatus) Common at Stoney point. A few seen at Lambert’s Bay

Reed Cormorant (Phalacrocorax africanus) Commonly seen at inland waterbodies.

White-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax lucidus) Common. Split from Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) of the northern hemisphere.

DARTERS

African Darter (Anhinga rufa) Common in the west along all watercourses.

 

PELICANS

Pink-backed Pelican (Pelecanus rufescens) 1 St Lucia, common Musi pan near Mkuze NP.

WILDFOWL

Spur-winged Goose (Plectropterus gambensis) See throughout south-west.

White-faced Whisting-duck (Dendrocygna viduata) 1 Rondevleit

South African Shelduck (Tadorna cana) Fairly common on small ponds throughout the western Cape. A few near Underberg.

Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) Abundant.

Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotus) 1 Musi Pan, several in Mkuze NP on one of the pans.

Red-billed Teal (Anas erythrorhynchus) Fairly common around Capetown

Hottentot Teal (Anas hottentota) Small flocks on Musi pan.

Yellow-billed Duck (Anas undulata) Small numbers throughout.

Cape Teal (Anas capensis) A pair at Upington. Common at Rondevleit

Cape Shovelor (Anas smithii) Common at Rondevleit.

Southern Pochard (Netta erythropthalma) Common at Rondevleit and near Underberg,  Good to see this species in numbers as they have all but disappeared in South America.

Maccoa Duck (Oxyura maccoa) Seen in the Capetown area.

Lammergier (Gypaetus barbartus) A superb pair with a large nestling in Lesotho. We watched these bird while enjoying a late lunch.

African White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) A few in Mkuze NP.

Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) 10 seen at Potberg. Severla small groups around Underberg and in Lesotho.

Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos trochliotus) Common in Kruger.

Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus) Several pairs seen in Kruger.

RAPTORS

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) Several in east.

Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus caeruleus) Fairly common.

Gymnogene (Polyboroides typus) 1 near Eshowe.

African fish Eagle (Haliatus vocifer) 2 at deHoop, 1 Mtunzini. Others in north east.

Yellow-billed Kite (Milvus parasitus) Common.

Black Sparrowhawk (Accipiter melanoleucos) 1 deHoop. 1 Xumeni forest, 1 Waakestroom.

African Goshawk (Accipiter tachiro) 1 Xumeni forest, 1 Mkhuze.

Shikra (Accipiter badius) 1 seen Ingeli forest.  1 pair seen in Mkhuze.

Pygmy Falcon (Polyhierax semitorquatus) A pair midway between Augrabies and Pofadder.

African Hawk Eagle (Hieraaatus fasciatus) 1 in Kruger near Oliphants river.

Wahlberg’s Eagle (Hieraatus wahlbergi) Common in east.

African Crowned Eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus) 1 adult displaying at Oribi gorge reserve. 1 adult on a nest at the Dlinza forest.

Martial Eagle (Polematus bellicosus) 1 near Mkuze, 1 near Orphen in Kruger NP.

Black Eagle (Aquila verreauxi) 1 pair with young just outside Springbok, 1 near Clan William and another at Lydenburg.

Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) 2 near Waakestoom.

Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax) Common in Kruger.

Lesser-spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina) Good numbers in Kruger feedingo on caterpillars.

Pale-chanting Goshawk (Meliarax canorus) Common in the west.

Dark-chanting Goshawk (Meliarax metabates) 1 seen near Trackers inn.

Lizard Buzzard (Kaupifalco monogrammicus) 1 at Sand Forest lodge.

Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourous) 1 at the marsh at Waakestroom.  

Black Harrier (Circus maurus) 1  near Springbok, 8 in West coast National park, 1 at the deHoop National Park.

African Marsh Harrier (Cicus ranivorus) 1 West Coast NP, 1 near Underberg.

Secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius) A pair near Waakestoom.

FALCONS

Peregrine (Falco peregrinus minor) 1 Augrabies NP.  This rather smasll subspecies may well warrant full species status.

Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus) 1 north of Cape Town, 1 near West Coast NP, Waakerstroom.

Bat Hawk (Machieramphus alcinus) 1 pair near Polokwane at a nest. We had fantastic views of this rather enigmatic species that is certialy becoming rather hard to find.

Taita Falcon (Falco fasciinucha) After some frustrating moments in the thick fog we finally saw a pair of this also rather uncommon species.

Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumani) Several seen near Waakestroom.

Rock Kestrel (Falco rupicollis) Small numbers throughout.

Greater Kestrel (Falco rupicoloides) A few seen in the northern drier areas.

GAMEBIRDS

Swainson’s Francolin (Francolinus swainsonii) Common in Kruger.

Cape Francolin (Francolinus capensis) Common from West Coast National park south to Cape town.

Natal Francolin (Francolinus natalensis) 1 seen south of Durban. Common in Kruger.

Red-necked Francolin (Francolinus afer) 2 seen in the Xumeni forest near Underberg.

H-Redwing Francolin (Francolinus levaillantii) Heard only near Waakestroom.

Greywing Francolin (Francolinus africanus) 1 near springbok, several seen in the deHoop Reserve.

Crested Francolin (Francolinus sephaena) Several pairs near Sand Forest lodge and in Kruger.

Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix) 1  near Oribi gorge, other heard Underberg. 1 St Lucia.

Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentota) 1 flushed east of Betty’s Bay. A very infrequently seen species we were very lucky to find.

CRANES

Crowned Crane (Balearicas regulorum) Several pairs around Underberg.

Wattled Crane (Grus carunculatus) 2 pairs seen near Underberg.

Blue Crane (Anthropides paradisea) several seen near West Coast National Park, abundant on the Overberg. A single pair seen near Underberg and failry common around Waakestroom.

OSTRICHES

Ostrich (Struthio camelus) Seen throughout western Cape.

RAILS

Buff-spotted Flufftail (Sarothrura elegans) 1 seen crossing the road at Xumeni.

Black Crake (Amauornis flavirostris) Heard at Rondevleit. Seen well in Kruger.

African Rail (Rallus caerulescens) 1 seen and many heard at Waakestroom.

Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio) Seen at Rondevleit in Capetown and in the north-east.

Common Moorhen (Gallinula chlorops) Seen throughout on small ponds.

BUSTARDS

All ten of the regions Bustards species seen!!!

Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori) 3 Spitskop private reserve and 1 female in Kruger.

Denham’s Bustard (Neottis denhami) 7 seen near deHoop NP, 7 seen near Underberg. On both occasions males were watched displaying. Also two seen near Waakestroom at the Burrows Korhaaan site.

Ludwig’s Bustard (Neottis ludwigii) 4 seen along the road from Pofadder to Springbok.

Red-crested Korhaan (Eupodotis ruficrista) Several see and heard in Kruger.

Black-bellied Korhaan (Eupodotis melanogaster) 1 Mkuze NP, 1 near Waakestroom at the Burrow’s Korhaan site. Another pair found in the Kruger NP (see photos).

Burrows Korhaan (Eupodotis burrowii) 7 seen near Dierkiesdorp east of Waakestroom and several others heard.  This can be a hard species to see. Of the 7 we saw 6 were feeding at termites erupting from their mounds.  A very pretty little species.

Oribi (Ourebia ourebi) 1 near Oribi gorge and another en route to Kruger NP.

Grey Rhebok (Pelea capreolus) Seen in deHoop NP, Sani Pass and near Waakestroom.

Southern Reedbuck (Redunca arundinum)  seen near Underberg and St Lucia en route to Cape Vidal.

Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsyprimus) Common in the larger parks.

Springbok (Antidorcus marsupialis) Common in Spitskop reserve and thereafter in desert areas south to Clan William.

Impala (Aepyceros melamphus ) Common in the east.Spitskop reserve.

Red Haartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) Common in Spitskop and near waakestroom.

Blesbok (Damaliscus dorcus phillipsi) Seen in Spitskop reserve and near Waakestroom.

Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) 48 Spitskop reserve, 1 near Springbok and several near Pofadder.

Southern Right Whale () Several seen from the coast near Capetown. 1 animal watched from Partridge point at length.  

Peters Epaulet Fruit Bat (Epomophorus petersoni) Common in Kruger at Skakhuze camp.

Wahlberg’s Epaulet Fruit Bat (Epomophorus wahlbergi) Common in Kruger NP at Skakhuze camp.
