About Us

Birding South America has been established by Eustace Barnes and Chris Abrams to offer a comprehensive selection of tours to every corner of the Neotropics and selected worldwide destinations.  This has evolved out of many years of running trips and birding expeditions.

Eustace has worked in South America as a field researcher and bird tour leader since 1991; a time when very few birders even visited the continent. Since that time he has developed a knowledge of every part of the continent and subsequently guided many tours to all the top destinations in South America. He has now become a widely-respected authority on the avifauna of that continent. In that time he has developed many unique itineraries and pioneered some with other neotropical enthusiasts.

Starting in Peru, Eustace worked at Explorer’s Inn in 1991 undertaking research on mixed flocks and Antbirds at Explorer’s Inn. Since then he has worked in Manu National Park and throughout Peru and Bolivia with Barry Walker. As a field artist Eustace has also made a contribution to the annotated checklist of Peruvian Birds entitled ‘A field guide to the Birds of Peru’ by James Clements. Eustace is now working on producing a more comprehensive Field Guide to the Birds of Bolivia with Dr Joe Tobias.

Chris has been birding for well over forty years. An ex teacher, he enjoys sharing with others the varied delights of birdwatching and all other forms of wildlife. He enjoys world travel and has travelled widely in North and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa. He has led birdwatching trips for various companies in many countries. He has served for several years on the Executive Committee of Kent Ornithological Society and designed and runs their website.

Today we organise and guide tours across the whole of South America. We have Andean itineraries from Costa Rica and Panama, Ecuador, Guyana and Venezuela in the north to Peru and Bolivia further south. It is these countries that hold a particular fascination for us because it is only here that each succeeding tour continues to produce surprises! Whilst Peru and Bolivia are most familiar to Eustace, he also has an in depth knowledge of the avifauna of most of the continent. Brasil has recently become a popular destination and Eustace has taken many groups to every corner of this huge country with a special focus on the Amazonian region. We also will be running trips further south to Argentina, Chile and Paraguay all of which have their own distinct avifauna and regions of special interest.

We are now working with 'Manu Expeditions' offering trips to Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana and Venezuela.  We shall be jointly programming guides and planning and organising itineraries. As such, Barry Walker, Huw Lloyd and Renzo Zeppelli will appear as guides for some of these trips.

Although we do specialise in South America we also run trips in Europe to Spain, Poland and Finland. Spain, of course, has a special connection with South America and there is both a fascinating cultural link to that continent as well as a rich wildlife heritage. Moving further afield, we also run tours to South Africa, India, Bhutan and Borneo.

Our commitment to excellence requires that all of our guides are fully equipped with a sound library and recording equipment. In the field we are known for our persistence in searching for species and patience in showing them to groups. Having been trained as teachers we are both committed to transmitting our enthusiasm for the environment and its wildlife when in the field. Our primary aim is to provide high quality field logistics and excellent field guidance devoted to tour participants' full enjoyment of the tour at reasonable prices which are kept low by minimising UK-based expenditure.
